On Sunday, October 23 in the peaceful morning hours at UCLA’s Murphy Sculpture Garden, mindfulness meditation expert Jessica Graham led an outdoor group meditation session in preparation for the morning’s screenings of Ata and Journey to the West, both of which draw on Buddhist ideas of insight and mindful awareness. Graham gently guided participants through the process of gradually releasing tension from the body and spirit, as well as cultivating a focused attention to the present experience. After completing the meditation session, participants enjoyed chai tea and joined other audience members at the UCLA James Bridges Theater, where Peter Sellars introduced the two films and placed their narratives in the broader context of Buddhist philosophy and Chinese literary tradition.
